Handicap - 23 May 2009

We had 36 riders line up for a 1 lap handicap race on the Kingsthorpe course and, luckily, despite showers on and off during the day, it stayed dry until after the race.  Thanks to everyone who helped put out signs, registration, etc.  With regard to the results shown below - riders finished in the order recorded.  Approximate times were noted only to assist future handicapping.  (Minutes are accurate - the seconds are approximate.)

Also, I had number 14 (Rod) recorded twice - but no number 4 (Simon).  If you think your placings are incorrect, please let me know.

Criterium - 15/11/2008

The last event of the current road series was a criterium yesterday afternoon, the 15th November.  Don't know whether it was the change of venue or start time - maybe both - but numbers-wise it was a huge success.  Fifty riders entered across the usual four grades with B and C grades being the most heavily subscribed.  It was an excellent afternoon's racing - despite two nasty falls which resulted in a couple of riders being transported to hospital.  I am pleased to report that both riders were allowed home - no serious injuries - although they will be sore and sorry for themselves for the next few days.  We wish both Graham and Tom speedy recoveries and hope you will be on the start line for the next event.

Thanks to Richard Watson, Commissaire, and Ross and Sally Harrington for First Aid.  In addition, thank you also to the corner marshalls and everyone involved in setting up and packing away.

The results for A, B and D grades are confirmed below - final C grade placings to follow:

 A Grade  1st  Pat Ryan
   2nd  Darren Rolfe
   3rd  Peter York
   Prime  Darren Rolfe
 B Grade  1st  Charlie Bennett

Metro Championships Mt Alford 1 June 2008

Richard Watson reports on Masters C grade
---------------------------------------------------

Masters C had to tackle 2 x 23km laps of the hilly Mt Alford circuit.

After a grey morning in Toowoomba, the skies cleared to a mild and partly
sunny afternoon in Mt Alford. However  there was a very strong easterly
blowing, which fortunately made the short race more selective.

Only a few kms into the race three riders escaped and I managed to
bridge up to them just before the biggest climb of the circuit. We got
a solid gap and worked really well together to extend our lead.  By the
time we turned onto Mt Alford road we had about 500m to a chasing
bunch of eight.

By the end of the first lap I was having trouble holding the pace,
as I was consistently a few beats over my lactic threshold, and had to
let go when we hit the hills again.  The chasers had dwindled to three,
one of whom popped just after I dropped back to them. My newly formed
group of three chased all the way to the finish but we were unable to
get closer than about 100m in the hills and lost some ground on the
run to the finish. Uncharacteristically I won the sprint for 4th.

Kingsthorpe Handicap - 24 May 2008

It was good to have 26 riders for the club handicap race last Saturday.  Great to have Gary Brown from Allora, Ken French and Mark Jordan from Chinchilla compete with us.  This is the finishing order from first place down.  Congratulations to Darren on a blistering ride.

Avanti Handicap - Lowood - 25 May 2008

Richard Watson reports on the Avanti

For various reasons, the Avanti Classic last Sunday was my first road race since the Cunningham Classic last August. When my race wheels emerged from the shed I had to clean the cobwebs off!

The handicapper smiled on me with a 9 min handicap. Other TCC riders included Neil & Rod (11 min) Pat (14 min), Jason & Adam (17 min), Pete & Phil (23 min) Danny (27 min) and Darren (chopping block, 29 min).

Scratch were at 31 min.

My group quickly dwindled to 6 riders so even with a smooth paceline we were not enough to stay away. The combined 11/14 min bunch (including Rod and Pat) caught us 30km into the first lap. We jumped on and this

9/11/14 group stayed intact until the last steep pitch of the climb up to the dam on the second lap.

Then a select group of about 8 riders drifted clear just as I started to cramp. The race winner came from this group.

The remainder of the large group rode well and 10km out from the finish we were within 1 min of the leaders but the pace eased as we neared the finish. Fortunately we were not caught, as scratch were only a minute or so behind us at the finish.

The winner of our group spring took 17th; I was cramping badly in the finale and had to be content with 27th.

As usual a very hard race. My average HR for 2:06 was 3 beats below LT.

Maryborough Masters Games - 5-7 October

A total of 23 riders from Toowoomba, Chinchilla and Warwick headed to Maryborough for the annual Masters Games last weekend.  The Maryborough & District Club host four races over the weekend:  a 150 metre ramp sprint on the track on Friday evening; an individual time trial on Saturday morning; a road race on Saturday afternoon; and a kermesse on Sunday morning.  There's always a BBQ lunch and final presentation back at the Club's track HQ to close the festivities.  This year, more than 100 riders competed.  Results and photos coming soon.

Individual Time Trial - 15 September

Thirty-four riders rolled up to test their legs over a challenging course at Kingsthorpe last Saturday morning, including a contingent from Chinchilla who had a very early start to their weekend!  Thanks go to the race organisers, the Commissaires and everyone who assisted on the day to ensure the event ran smoothly and safely.  There was a moment of panic on the finish line when the stopwatch battery died, but Ken Dixon's quick thinking (and a spare watch) saved the day!  Congratulations to all riders - we hope you had a great race.

The top three placegetters in the Women's division were Pat Woods, Jess Garratt and Rachael Laves.  The Men's division saw TCC President, Phil Muller, finish 2nd in a Chinchilla "sandwich" - between Ken French in 1st place and Mark Jordan in 3rd.

Results - Teams Time Trial - 18 August

Thank you to the organisers and the officials on the day for a great event.  The race attracted 14 teams; several upped the ante and included two women riders on their roster!  Also, thanks to those riders who came all the way from Cunnamulla - it was great to have you at our race!   There were 27 riders on day licences so we hope you all enjoyed the experience and will consider racing with us again in the future.

Placegetters in the Teams Time Trial were:

1st - 44.27 - Ross Harrington, Neil White, Ros Schumacher and Jason Genrich

2nd - 44.4 - John Rafter, Amanda Richards, Pat Ryan and Paul Cochrane

3rd - 45.41 - Doug Graham, Pat Woods, Justin Eastwell and Adam Patching

Everyone was a winner!

Road Race Championships - 18 October 2009
